Koktebel Jazz Fest is a festival whose location is always by the seaside and Chornomorsk city in Odesa region is an ideal place for that. In this city, there is nothing but the clear sea and big beaches with snow-white sand. Besides, the summer (surprise!) is almost over and the number of beach-days has to be urgently increased. Festival atmosphere and music will only make them better. Koktebel Jazz Fest has long refused from one genre and is now the largest multi-format music event in Ukraine.
The lineup this year, as usual, is quite diverse. The main headliner of the festival is the British Morcheeba, well-known trip hop veterans with their latest release Blaze Away.
Another band whose format is in perfect sync with the seashore is Koop Oscar Orchestra, the project of iconic Swede Oscar Simonsson and Lithuanian singer Jazzu. Their music is a fusion of jazz groove and modern lounge with gentle samples.
Of course, what music festival at the seaside could pass without a good portion of reggae? Jazz Koktebel has taken care of that: the listeners will be able to enjoy positive vibrations of the Inner Circle band – famous Jamaicans that mark this year their 50th staging anniversary. Despite being the veterans of the genre, the band has a modern sound to it and blends in well in the music mainstream: Inner Circle is open for innovations and works with pleasure with young reggae and pop artists.
However, one of the main music events of the upcoming fest is the performance of the trip hop legend Martina Topley-Bird. It’s her voice that we hear in the first three Tricky albums, in Massive Attack ‘Heligoland’ album of 2010, in Gorillaz’s song ‘All Alone’ and in many other places: with Primus, Prodigy and David Holmes. Her solo career also had a success. She has released 4 albums, and the first one – Quixotic –was at once nominated for the Mercury Prize Award. And now, after 8 years she is releasing a four-track EP MTB Continued. So at the stage, she will be performing a new material. It will be her first time singing in Ukraine and it seems it will be an exclusive concert of the singer: there are no posts about her previous or future shows on her website. Therefore, this performance will be a music event of the European level.
Another of the strong positioning of Jazz Koktebel is a conscious point of view on the modern alternative Ukrainian stage. And this year, too, will be no exception. Onuka will perform for the fans of a stylish electro-pop. The band will fly to the Black Sea directly from the Sziget Festival. One of the best concert Ukrainian projects - the stunning Dakh Daughters - is traditionally highly anticipated by the public. There will be interesting young experimental bands, such as the DZ'OB (Dnipro). This acoustic-electronic band immediately attracted the attention with its unusual cross-genre which successfully combines academic instruments (cello, oboe, violin, viola, bassoon, clarinet) and electronics. It sounds all very bold, new and unusual. Another group that is very interested in exploring the electronic music format - Oy Sound System. This is a project of the Halanevych brothers, the eldest of whom - Marko - is known on the international stage as DakhaBrakha member.
The main event of the Ukrainian Koktebel Jazz Fest will be the performance of the most adequate band of the country with the support of the best jazz musicians of Ukraine - All Stars of Ukrainian Jazz. Somehow, the undetectably deep underground project Hammerman destroying viruses has penetrated the main festival sites of Ukraine.
