Heavy snowfalls have returned to Ukraine. This morning weather forecasters warned of a bad weather conditions deterioration in Odesa, Mykolaiv, Vinnytsia, Kirovohrad, Cherkasy, Poltava, Kyiv, Chernihiv, and Sumy regions. Heavy precipitation was expected, wet snow, gusts of wind up to 15-20 meters per second, and slippery ice on roads.
It was noted that the epicenter of the weather ferocity would be Kyiv and the Kyiv region.
The responsible services in the listed regions managed to cope with the snow somehow, but the snow became another shock for the capital.
At lunchtime, due to the difficult meteorological conditions, part of the flights from the international airport "Kyiv" (Zhulyany) was moved to the "Boryspil" airport.
In the evening, the press service of the airport announced the cancellation of aircraft departures. "Due to bad weather, high clouds, low-adhesion, side wind and icy rain, flights of many airlines were canceled, at the moment there are 16 canceled flights. All passengers who arrived at the airport received food, hotel rooms; those who needed a lodging were taken to the hotels. The situation is unlikely to change tomorrow," the press service told. Citizens are urged to check the status of their flights.
About 450 units of snow-removing equipment were involved to eliminate the effects of bad weather on the streets of the capital, however as of 16:00, traffic jams has embraced the whole city.
In particular, the cars were stuck in a snow trap in the area of Bessarabska Square, Peremohy Avenue, Druzhby Narodiv Boulevard, Lesya Ukrainka Boulevard, Taras Shevchenko Boulevard, streets of Vadym Getman, Zhylyanska, Saksaganskogo, Tolstoy, Olena Teliga, and Dovzhenko. In addition, jams were witnessed on Pivdenny, Darnytsky, and Moscow bridges, as well as on the Metro Bridge.
All in all, about 30% of the monthly rainfall rate has already fallen in the city: "By the dinner, 14 mm of precipitation were recorded. The average amount of precipitation for December in Kyiv is 49 millimeters, which is about 30% of the monthly norm. Even during the night, 10 millimeters may fall, because the snowfall continues," the deputy director of Ukrgidrometcenter Anatoly Prokopenko in his interview with UNN.
According to the latest information, now the roads of the capital are relatively empty, so the level of traffic jams fell. About 600 units of communal equipment, as well as private equipment, are used to clean the roads.
The Kyiv City State Administration began talking about freight traffic restrictions.
On Tuesday, many schoolchildren might have a day off. Kyiv state administration warns that now all educational institutions, schools, and kindergartens in Kyiv are working in regular mode, but because of the bad weather, parents can independently decide not to let their children go to school. This will not be considered a skipping.
In general, according to the State Emergency Service, the roads on the roads of Ukraine are secure, as of 4 PM, no any congestions are recorded.
There are no restrictions on the movement of vehicles due to snowfall on motor roads.
In total, 747 units of snow cleaning equipment are on duty on the roads and 847 of Ukravtodor personnel are involved.
