Born in Slovenia (then part of Yugoslavia), she became a permanent resident of the United States in 2001 and a citizen in 2006. She will make history as the first immigrant first lady since Louisa, wife to John Quincy Adams, in 1825.
Her parents managed car and motorcycle dealerships for a state-owned vehicle manufacturer, and was a member of the Slovenian Communist Party. Melania grew up in a modest apartment in a concrete housing block in Sevnica. When she was a teenager, the family moved to a two-story house near Sevnica and used a high-rise apartment in Ljubljana. She attended the Secondary School of Design and Photography in Ljubljana and studied at the University of Ljubljana for one year before dropping out.
Young Melania began her modeling career at age 16, then at the age of 18 she began working for Milan and Paris model agencies. She lived in Paris and then New York and has since graced the covers of GQ, Vanity Fair Italia, American Vogue Bulgaria and more. She also featured as a bikini model in a 2000 Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issue.
Melania met her future husband Donald at a New York fashion party in 1998. Although she first refused to date him, the couple eventually began establishing a relationship and were engaged in 2004. The following year they married in a lavish Palm Beach, Florida. Bill and Hillary Clinton were among the 350 guests who attended her wedding with Trump in 2005. In 2006, Trump gave birth to Barron William Trump. Their son is husband Donald's fifth child.
She speaks Slovenian, Serbian, English, French and German.
In July 2016, Melania Trump gave a speech at the Republican National Convention, which in some parts, were found to be identical to Michelle Obama's 2008 Democratic National Convention speech.
Just few time after that New York Post published nude photos of a then 25-year-old Melania Trump, including one where she lay in bed with another woman. Many of the photos were published for a men's French magazine that is no longer in circulation.
Melania Trump has a successful jewelry line on QVC, as well as a skincare line. She has appeared in an Aflac commercial, co-hosted on The View, and appeared on her husband's NBC reality show, Celebrity Apprentice.
“He’s tough when he has to be, but he’s also kind and fair and caring,” she said, describing her husband as “intensely loyal” to family, friends, employees and the country. “If you want someone to fight for you and your country, I can assure you, he’s the guy,” Melania told in support of her husband.
While Melania has never brought husband Donald to visit her home town, residents of Sevnica say they are proud that a Slovenian – and her husband – are now set to live in the White House.
