Mariupol Mayor Vadym Boychenko, in the air of 112 Ukraine TV channel told about how the city eliminated the effects of militants’ artillery fire on the Skhidnyi district two years ago. Today Mariupol hosts events dedicated to the second anniversary of the tragedy: the liturgy was held, people gathered at the monument to the victims of the shelling.
"Everyone gathered together for the purpose of helping each other. There were ordinary people who were not indifferent to the tragedy - who we now call the volunteers. There were doctors from Emergency Service, metallurgists and international organizations. The whole Ukraine was with us: Cherkassy, Lviv, Kryvyi Rih. At the sessions of their Councils they promptly decided to allocate 500 thousand UAH for us, and we felt this support. For 2 months we were managed to restore the 1.5 thousand apartments, we had 15 apartment houses with a direct hit, and restored 250 private homes, 3 schools, 4 kindergartens. We removed the wounds from the shells on the pavement, but, unfortunately, we were not able to remove the wounds from our heart and our soul, “ said the mayor.
According to him, today the city authorities promptly respond to the problems of residents of the affected district. “From the municipal budget were allocated over 19 million UAH for the material support of the residents. The central government allocated more than 5 million UAH, and Azovstal plant together with Ilyich plant also allocated material assistance. Together with the EU, we have opened an outpatient clinic, medicine has come close here. Currently near 12 thousand people are the clients of this outpatient clinic, and more than 2 thousand children," Boychenko said.
Let us remind, on January 24, 2015 the Skhidnyi district of the city of Mariupol was subjected to massive bombardment. According to the police information, in result of shelling 31 people were killed: 17 women, 12 men and 2 children. 117 people received injuries of varying severity: 56 women, 49 men and 12 children. And now some of the victims are being treated for post-effects of the shelling. More than 80 objects were damaged by shelling.
This bombardment was one of the largest since the beginning of the antiterrorist operation. The damage was estimated at 100 million hryvnia. The event was characterized as an act of terrorism.
On June 22, 2016 the court has sentenced a former police officer who zeroed Grad weapons of terrorists during the shelling of the Skhidnyi district of Mariupol.
According to investigators, 41-year-old Mariupol citizen, who previously worked in law enforcement, began collaborating with terrorists. He shared with the militants secret information about the locations of members of the Armed Forces of Ukraine and other military formations, which take part in the ATO. In the future, this information was used by terrorists for the shelling.
In particular, on January 24, 2015, he corrected the actions of terrorists. According to investigators, the terrorists planned to bombard the checkpoints and other places of Armed Forces dislocation. Through inaccurate coordinates under fire got Skhidnyi district of the city of Mariupol.
A man who helped pro-Russian militants was sentenced to 9 years in prison.
