During the inaugural speech of Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky he announced his intention to dissolve the parliament, and the next day he signed a decree on early termination of the powers of the Verkhovna Rada of the VIII convocation and the appointment of early parliamentary elections on July 21.

Zelensky’s bill on abolishing the majority electoral system was not supported, so the early elections would be held under the mixed electoral system, introduced in 2012.

This means that 225 parliamentarians, the citizens of Ukraine, must elect from the lists of political parties, and another 225 in the majority districts. However, due to the fact that Russia has annexed Crimea and occupied some districts of the Donetsk and Luhansk regions, there would be only 199 majoritarian candidates. Large cities like Kyiv, Kharkiv, Dnipro, and Odesa delegate from 4 to 13 MPs to the Verkhovna Rada.

The nomination of candidates for the Verkhovna Rada MPs started a little more than a week ago, on May 24, and will continue until June 20. According to the Central Election Commission, currently, 32 people have registered as such. All of them are self-nominated.
