Football Federation of Ukraine was founded December 13, 1991. It became a member of FIFA and UEFA in 1992. The national team of Ukraine participated in the final stage of the World Cup and one UEFA European Championship. Its highest achievement was reaching the quarterfinals of the 2006 World Cup held in Germany.

Ukraine at the World Cup and European Championship in the XXI century

World Cup-2002. Ukraine has not passed qualifying round, losing in the playoffs by an aggregate score of the German national team (1:1 at home and 1:4 away).

European Championship-2004. Has not passed the qualifying stage.

2006 World Championships (achievement - 1/4 finals). Debut at a major international tournament was the best result in the history of the Ukrainian national team. The Blue and Yellows started with the crushing defeat of Spain (0:4), but then with the same score they defeated Saudi Arabia and Tunisia (1:0), taking the second position. At the 1/8 finals, Ukraine overcame Switzerland in regular and extra time with amazing penalty shootout, which ended with the score 3: 0. Well, in the quarterfinals Ukraine was defeated by the future world champion Italy (0:3).

European Championship 2008. Has not passed the qualifying stage.

2010 World Championship. Has not passed qualifying round, losing in the playoffs by an aggregate score of the Greek national team (0: 0 away and 0: 1 at home).

European Championship 2012 (Group). At Euro 2012 Ukraine was one of the hosting countries. It played in one group with the favorites, France and England. The first game with Sweden was successful (2:1), Ukrainians hoped for the further fortune, but lost 0: 2 with France and 1:2 with England, remaining at the third position.

2014 World Championship. Has not passed the qualifying round, losing in the playoffs by an aggregate score of the French national team. Home games promised a good start (2:0), but in the second leg away from home Ukraine lost 0:3.

Ukraine and the qualifying round of EURO 2016

As a result of the Euro-2016 qualifying tournament, Ukrainian team has got into group C together with current European champion Spain, Slovakia, Belarus, Macedonia, and Luxembourg. Ukrainians have put themselves in a difficult position losing the game with Slovakia (0:1). The away match with the Slovaks ended with a draw (0:0). Besides, Ukraine has suffered two defeats from Spain (0:1) and ranked third place from which came to the playoffs qualifying round.

Slovenian national team became Ukraine’s rival at this stage. Having won 2:0 at home, Ukraine played 1:1 away and overcame the qualifying barrier.

Fomenko almost always plays the same 4-3-2-1 scheme, in which there are three distinct central midfield destroyers. In recent matches, they were Stepanenko, Rybalka, and Sydorchuk, as well as Rotan. If necessary, one of them might be replaced by Zinchenko or Kovalenko. Along the edges of the attack, space is reserved for Yarmolenko and Konoplyanka; Seleznev and Zozulya compete for a place of sole striker.

Ukraine and the Northern Ireland played only four matches. First, the teams met in qualifying cycle of 1998 World Cup, Ukraine won both matches (1:0 away and 2:1 at home). And then the ways of Ukrainie and Ireland crossed during Euro 2004 qualifying cycle; two zero draws were recorded.

Ukraine has a series of five successful matches with Poland (+3 = 2-0). Poles won two victories in the first two matches, held in 1998 and 2000. The last time Ukraine and Poland met three years ago in the qualifying round of 2014 World Cup. Then Ukrainians won 3:1 in Warsaw and 1:0 in Odesa.
