Around 08:00 in the morning, intelligence officer Maksym Shapoval was in the Solomyansky district of Kyiv. At the crossroads of the streets of Solomyanska and Mechanizatoriv, his Mercedes-Benz car has exploded.
The explosion was very powerful, the wreckage of the car scattered all along the road, damaging the nearby cars. Colonel Shapoval died on the spot, and later the media wrote that the remains of the deceased were scattered by tens of meters. Two passers-by became victims of the explosion: a woman born in 1990 (she has got shrapnel wounds to her legs), as well as a man born in 1946 (shrapnel wounds of the chin). They were helped on the spot without further hospitalization.
Several police outfits, ambulances, rescuers, explosives experts, and forensic experts arrived at the scene.
The police said that, according to preliminary data, an explosive device was placed in the car. The media writes that the explosive device had a capacity of 500 grams in TNT equivalent.
Kyiv Police has almost immediately reported that the identity of the deceased was established, but the name was not called. The media wrote one by one that it was an intelligence officer.
Our source in the Ministry of Defense reported that the head of one of the Defense Ministry's divisions Shapoval was killed. Later the defense department confirmed that 39-year-old colonel Shapoval died. According to some reports, he was the head of the special reserve department of the Main Intelligence Directorate, on others he was the commander of special forces.
Shapoval had a wife and two children.
UNN referring to sources in the Ministry of Defense reported that Shapoval knew how the ex-Russian deputy of the State Duma Denis Voronenkov was killed in the Ukrainian capital.
"The direct subordinate of Colonel Shapoval, who died as a result of an car explosion, directed the protection of the Russian politician," the source writes. However, it did not link the murder of Shapoval with the Voronenkov case.
Undermining the car was qualified under the article of "terrorist act". The case was referred to the Chief Military Prosecutor's Office for investigation.
People's Deputy of Ukraine from the Popular Front, the adviser to the Minister of Internal Affairs, Anton Herashchenko, said: "The car bombing of Shapoval is on par with the assassination attempt on Colonel Olexander Kharabyryush (killed in an explosion in a car in Mariupol) and with an attempt against me. And with the murder of Pavel Sheremet."
According to him, the specific performers might be different, but the organizers are the same.
"Since last year, a terrorist center has been established on the territory of Russia. The purpose is to send killers and saboteurs to the territory of Ukraine for committing murders and acts of terrorism," he said.
Another opinion was expressed by another adviser to the head of the Interior Ministry - Zoryan Shkiryak.
"I have no doubt that this terrorist attack was organized by the Russian special services: the Main Intelligence Directorate, the General Staff of the Russian Federation, the FSB. This was another act of intimidation and terrorist aggression against Ukraine. This crime is in the same chain with those terrorist acts that were purposefully carried out by the Russian Federation against the state officials, against servicemen of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, who defend Ukraine against Russian aggression," he said in an interview.
This is not the first such attack in recent years. In March 2017, a member of the Security Service of Ukraine, Colonel Olexander Kharabyush, was killed as a result of an explosion in a car in Mariupol. Undermining the car was qualified as a terrorist act. In the same way, journalist Pavel Sheremet was killed in July 2016.
