Tymofiy Nagorny remains incarcerated without bail.
The new arrest will last until November 30. At the same time, the investigation regarding the details of the case, which is opened against Nagorny, continues. And that threatens a businessman with a serious period behind the bars. Let us find out first who Tymofiy Nagorny is and what do we known about him.
Businessman and husband of a woman-gymnast
Many people have heard a lot about Timofiy Nagorny as the husband of Lilia Podkopayeva. In fact, everything is more complicated.
First, Nagorny has long had the status of "ex-husband" of the famous gymnast. And secondly, besides his marriage to Podkopayeva, other events happened in his life.
Nagorny is a businessman and sponsor, president of the “Volunteer Fund of Ukraine,” and director of the Sport-Service international company.
He comes from Makiivka (Donbas). The businessman headed the Volunteer Fund in 2009, before that, he was the development director at Ukr.net.
Nagorny tried to become a member of Verkhovna Rada in 2012, but he failed to win at his majority constituency. In 2014 there was an event from which, perhaps, the whole story began.
In September 2014, he participated in “Peace March” in Moscow, where Nagorny and his assistant were arrested for disobeying police officers, however, they were released after 5 days.
Ukraine’s Security Service claimed that then Tymofiy Nagorny was recruited by the Russian special services.
A criminal case against Nagorny
The background is as follows: a certain businessman from Canada has applied to Ukraine’s Security Service with a statement about fraud and extortion. He stated that someone was trying to extort money from him for closing the criminal case against him and his parents in Russia. According to the Canadian businessman, three persons were ready to solve his problem: two Russians and a Ukrainian (Nagorny).
Ukraine’s Security Service has demonstrated video records that, apparently, were provided by the businessman himself. Nagorny appears on this records.
During the meeting in Kyiv, he suggested that the situation should be solved through Russian Prosecutor General Yuriy Chaika with the help of the former Ukrainian people's deputy Artem Pshonka.
Nagorny requested 1 million 200 thousand dollars for his “services” – a million for closing the case, and 200 thousand for mediating.
The video shows Nagorny talking about his activities, including details of his recruitment, visits to the State Duma and the Putin administration, and different instructions.
“Following the instructions of the FSB curators, a person (Nagorny) had to create and develop a political party as a tool for promoting foreign policy interests of the Russian Federation and destabilizing the situation in Ukraine. This structure was to take part in elections, lobby and defend the interests of the Russian Federation, prevent Ukraine from joining the EU and NATO, to raise the issue of granting the Russian language the status of the state language in our state," head of Security Service Office in Kyiv and Kyiv region Oleh Valendyuk has claimed.
The information about the party allegedly appeared from Nagorny’s telephone conversation record. The record stated that the goal of the party was to promote the idea of the non-aligned status of Ukraine, the Russian as the second state language, and an idea "if Ukraine follows EU, it must do it along with Russia."
A number of names appear on the published records: Putin’s assistant Vladislav Surkov, Ukraine’s Former PM of Yanukovych’s times Mykola Azarov, former head of presidential administration Andriy Klyuev, and Viktor Medvedchuk.
Nagorny was detained on October 4th. Then he was arrested with the right to bail in the amount of 19 thousand USD.
The businessman was charged with treason and fraud. A week later, Nagorny was released and re-arrested.
How Nagorny explains the situation
Nagorny hinted that he was ordered. In an interview with Vesti outlet, he said the following:
“I try to remember those whom I refused lately. There were several such people, and there were different negotiation processes, none of them threatened me, they were carefully negotiated. Someone apparently thought it wrong of me to refuse. Probably, it was probably a proposal that I shouldn’t refuse. After that, the events that I am currently involved in happened."
Apparently, Tymofiy Nagorny will remain in jail until November 30. By that time, it is quite possible that new details of this case will appear.
