Ukraine and the world revere the memory of Holodomor victims on November 26, 2016.
Each year, the Ukrainian Institute of National Memory has a special theme to highlight a particular aspect of the tragedy of Holodomor of 1932-1933. The slogan of the current commemorative events - "Holodomor did not break us". The main events will be held in the capital, but Ukrainians are encouraged to go to the memorials in their cities, or light a candle at home.
Day of memory of Holodomor Victims was established by Presidential Decree of Leonid Kuchma №1310/1998 and Viktor Yushchenko № 431/2007.
On this day, citizens traditionally attend a memorial service and laying a symbolic pots with grain and candles at the monuments to the victims of Holodomor in Ukraine.
Each year, the"Light a Candle" action takes place. Traditionally, at 4 p.m., the memory of killed Ukrainian people during the genocide is revered by a minute of silence and a lighted candle is set on the windowsill. In large cities, the main squares light candles too.
