Ukrainian radio stations are obliged to broadcast every fourth song in Ukrainian language starting from today. The respective law from June 16 enters into its legal force today, on November 8, 2016.
The legal act introduces the amendments to the Law of Ukraine in TV and Radio broadcasting. The amendments commit the broadcasters to provide at least 35% of all aired songs to be in Ukrainian throughout the day, and 35% of all the songs aired at 7:00 – 14:00 and 15:00 – 22:00. Due to the transitional articles of the document, the 35%-share is set gradually. Thus, the quote for the Ukrainian language songs shall be 25% during the first year, 30% during the second year and 35% during the third year.
Radio stations broadcasting on EU official languages have this quota on the level of 25%.
The transitional articles of the new law stipulate for 50% of Ukrainian language shows, including news-analytical blocks and entertainment shows, within the first year of the law, 55% - during the second year and 60% during the third year after the law enters into its force today.
The law also stipulates for 50% share of audio-visual content produced in Ukraine.
Violation of the law shall result in the recovery of a fine of 5% of the license fee.
As it was reported earlier, the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine entitled the National Council of Television and Radio Broadcasting expanded rights to imply sanctions towards TV and radio companies with no notice. The amount of the recovering payment shall be defined in a new manner.
