Ukrainian internet providers will need at least a year to restructure their networks to realize the decision of Ukrainian president to block Russian websites. This was announced by the experts from the Ukrainian Internet Association (UIA), according to 5 Kanal.
"Ukraine is free from censorship right now. Thus censorship is impossible technically. Can we change it? Yes. But the presidential decree itself will not do the job, much work should be done in order to achieve that. If there is a political will, this work will be launched… Before the first website is blocked, by the decision of the court, by presidential decree, by any other criteria, all 4 thousand operators and providers existing in Ukraine will have to restructure their networks. This is a huge amount of work. Some of them, small operators, will need a day or week. But major operators may have to spend years to achieve this," expert Maksym Tuliev noted.
On May 16, 2017, President Petro Poroshenko signed the decree banning major Russian web portals and social networks in Ukraine; Yandex.ru, Vk.com, Odnoklassniki.ru users in Ukraine will lose their accounts and will have no access to the respective websites.
Beyond that, the Internet Association of Ukraine requested the President of Ukraine, the National Security and Defense Council of Ukraine and the Security Service of Ukraine to explain how to execute the decree regarding sanctions against the Russian services within the legislation.
