The key term for holding such a referendum is achievement of corresponding level by the Armed Forces of Ukraine, which would allow them to match NATO’s criteria and standards. This opinion was expressed during the briefing by Kostiantyn Yelisieiev, the Deputy Head of the Presidential Administration.
“In order to make this referendum happen, certain conditions are needed. The decision and time frame of holding the referendum will depend on attaining these conditions. And the key term is reaching sufficient compliance with NATO criteria by Ukraine,” he noted.
At the same time, he stressed, that the decision on joining the alliance has to be taken by Ukrainian people. “President did not say anything new. Head of State has repeated a well-known position that the final decision on joining NATO should be the people’s decision. And this is the only sense of this commentary,” Kostiantyn Yelisieiev said.
As it was reported earlier, the President of Ukraine Petro Poroshenko declared that he intends to hold a referendum on the country’s entry to the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) during his interview to the Berliner Morgenpost.
