Human rights violations in territories of Donbas uncontrolled by Ukraine’s government hinder democratic local elections, the UN Assistant Secretary General for Human Rights, Ivan Simonovic, stated, ‘Interfax-Ukraine’ reports.

‘First of all, basic rights of at least 2,7 people in militants-held territories are violated. Restriction of freedom, expression, peaceful assembly and association and inability to express opposing opinions. All this raises doubt as to the possibility to conduct local elections in territories where the situation will not improve’, - Simonovic said.

‘Only respect for civilian and political rights will enable local elections and will ensure their outcome will be recognized’, - he added.
