EBRD to finance interim storage facility construction in Chornobyl

The government decree will give an opportunity to sign a new agreement, which will help finance the completion of the spent nuclear fuel storage facility

The decree of the Cabinet of the Ministers of Ukraine from June 14, 2017 on amendments to the agreement with the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) on financing of interim storage facility construction on the territory of Chornobyl Nuclear Power Plant was published in the official publication Uryadovy Kuryer, the document came into force.

Thus, the government agreed on amendment to the agreement on project of nuclear safety of Chornobyl Power Plant between the EBRD, the Cabinet of Ministers and Chornobyl Nuclear Power Plant state enterprise.     

Minister of Ecology and Natural Resources of Ukraine was authorized to sign the agreement.

The government decree will allow to complete internal procedures, necessary for signing of the agreement and will facilitate additional financing from the Nuclear Safety Account for the completion of the spent nuclear fuel storage facility construction on Chornobyl Nuclear Power Plant. That will provide its storage for up to a hundred years.

EBRD, Cabinet of Ministers and Chornobyl Nuclear Power Plant signed on November 12, 1996 an ‘Agreement on gratuitous loan’ whose goal is to finance the construction of the facilities for decommissioning of the Chornobyl power plant, including the spent nuclear fuel storage facility.

Earlier it was reported that over 50 companies want to invest in solar energy in Chornobyl. Pilot project will be realized on two sites.
