Kyiv Pechersk court issued permission for the arrest of ex-president Viktor Yanukovych and former Interior Minister Vitaliy Zakharchenko on charges of illegal detention of the assistant of the Head of Ukrainian Orthodox Church (Moscow Patriarchate) Oleksandr Drabinko. This was stated in the relevant decisions published on EGRSR website.
In particular, on January 3, the court at the request of the inspector of the Prosecutor General’s Office authorized the detention of Yanukovych, took a similar decision regarding Zakharchenko, and permitted to arrest Valeriy Koryak - the former head of the Kyiv police.
The investigator of the Prosecutor Genera’s Office said that the suspects are hiding from the investigation and trial. In order to avoid the destruction of evidence and impact on the victims, witnesses and experts, investigators believe that the suspects should be detained and brought to court for the appointment of a preventive measure in the form of detention.
Zakharchenko, Yanukovych and Koryak are suspected of illegal detention of Oleksandr Drabinko - personal assistant to the late Primate of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church, Metropolitan of Kyiv and All Ukraine Volodymyr. Investigators believe that Yanukovych and his associates pressured late Metropolitan to make him abdicate.
Vadim Novinsky is also under criminal investigation for allegedly helping President Yanukovych in 2013 to take control of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church (Moscow Patriarchate).
