European Union expressed its position on the issue of blocking social media and sanctions against IT-companies. This was reported by Ukrayinska Pravda, referring to Jurgis Vilcinskas, the Head of Press & Information Section of EU office.

"We know about the decision of National Security and Defense Council of Ukraine to block a number of Russian online services, including popular social media platforms in Ukraine in terms of restrictive measures, adopted by Ukraine," Jurgis Vilcinskas announced in a commentary to the agency.

He also stressed that European Union "heard public statements by Ukrainian authorities that the decision was taken based on the interests of national information security and facts of numerous recent cyber attacks and disinformation campaigns on Ukraine".

"We recognize that the defense of national security is a priority for Ukrainian government," EU representative stressed.

At the same time, he added that these reasons are insufficient.

"However, we expect the authority to guarantee that the restrictive measures taken in the interests of national security, will not have a negative impact on fundamental right to freedom of expression," diplomat emphasized.

Jurgis Vilcinskas also added that EU is still waiting for detailed explanation from Ukrainian authorities, "including the fact of temporary nature of sanctions".
