Rio 2016: Chinese weightlifter wins gold, sets new world record

Qingquan Long beats the Sydney 2000 record in his sport

On August 7, weightlifters struggled for two sets of medals of the ongoing Summer Olympics in Rio. China’s Qingquan Long, the 25-year-old triumphant of Beijing 2008, claimed the main prize again. Competing in his 56 kilogram-weight division, the athlete lifted 307 kilograms in total (137 in snatch and 170 in clean & jerk). Thus, he has set the new world record with this total result, and the weight that he lifted became a new Olympic record.

The previous world record (305 kg) was set by Turkish weightlifter Halil Mutlu during the 2000 Summer Olympics in Sydney.
