Ukrainian poet Serhiy Zhadan was detained in the capital of Belarus without explanation, according to his Facebook message on Saturday, February 11.

As the poet noted, policemen visited his hotel room around 2 a.m. and brought him to the police station without any explanation. After a while, they found out in their database that Serhiy Zhadan is prohibited to enter Russian Federation for “terrorist activity” since 2015, he says.

“As Belarus and Kazakhstan share one visa zone with Russia, the prohibition automatically extends to Belarus and Kazakhstan. I can handle the impossibility to enter Kazakhstan somehow, but it’s sad about Belarus. I had to spend all night in a cell. In the morning, I was writing explanatory reports very long, they asked about terrorism. In the end, I received a stamp banning entry to Belarus for indefinite period,” Zhadan wrote.

He reached out to Ukrainian MFA and Embassy in Belarus requesting to react to the fact that “Ukrainian poets are arrested without explanation and kept in cell for no reason.”

It is noteworthy that Ukrainian journalist Roman Sushchenko and filmmaker Oleg Sentsov are being held in the Russian Federation accused of spying and terrorist activity respectively.
