Pope Francis called on the leaders to work together to fight the "plague of terrorism." He said this during a traditional New Year's Sunday sermon in St. Peter's Square at the Vatican, according to Reuters.
Pope changed the prepared text to denounce the attack in a nightclub in Istanbul, which killed at least 39 people.
"Unfortunately, violence struck us even this night, full of good wishes and hopes of When suffering, I express my closeness to the Turkish people, I pray for the many victims and wounded, and the entire nation in mourning.." he said.
"I ask the Lord to give the support to all people of goodwill who courageously confront the plague of terrorism and the blood spot, which covers the world like the shadow of fear and fills with a sense of loss," he said.
Earlier it was reported that at least 39 people, including 16 foreigners, have died in an attack on a nightclub in Istanbul as they were celebrating the New Year. Another 69 people were being treated in hospital.
