New Hryvna banknotes will be made of flax. The first set of flax banknotes has been produced at a banknote factory in Zhytomyr region. Earlier banknotes of Ukraine's national currency were made of cotton fiber. But the material is imported and, thus, more expensive. Deputy Head of the National Bank of Ukraine Yakiv Smoliy stated that using flax in production of national currency banknotes will help reduce production costs and support national manufacturer. Currently the set of banknotes is being tested at the Mint.
