Polish F-16 Yastreb fighters, which are based in Siauliai in Lithuania within the framework of the NATO mission, intercepted the Russian reconnaissance aircraft Il-20M. This is reported by Polish Radio with reference to the Center for the Joint Command of the Air Force (AIRCOM) in Ramstein, Germany.

"The incident involving Russian aircraft took place on Monday, May 15. Polish F-16 fighters flew from the base to identify the object that appeared above the international waters of the Baltic Sea, it was an Il-20 reconnaissance aircraft," the report said.

The Russian Il-20 flew to Kaliningrad, but after it was intercepted by the Polish F-16, returned to the base. At the same time, its transponder (device that allows to identify the plane) was swithed off.

It is noted that this was the first military mission in the framework of the current change in the NATO Baltic Air Policing mission, which began in May. It consists in patrolling airspace over Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia. Within the framework of this mission, the Polish military contingent Orlik 7 is deployed at the base in Siauliai, Lithuania.

We recall, on Thursday, May 4, the US Air Force again rose its fighter-jets to intercept Russian aircraft in the Alaska area.
