Lithuania will construct a fence on the border with the Kaliningrad Oblast, Russia. Corresponding expenses are incorporated in the national budget for 2017, reports the newspaper Lietuvos žinios.
Until now, the border between the states was indicated only by special characters and 13-meter control band. The protection of borders with Russia will be enhanced not only through the budget, but at the expense of EU public security fund - for this money country will acquire a modern system of border surveillance.
Authorities hope that construcring the fence they will effectively protect the economic interests of Lithuania and other countries. The ability to install a fence appeared after completed work on the demarcation of the border with the Kaliningrad region, started in 2011.
Interior Minister Eimutis Misyunas said that this year for the first time for the entire period of independence Lithuania allocates about 3.6 million euros for the construction at the border with the Kaliningrad region.
"These funds should be enough for our purose. Next to the fence a modern surveillance system will be installed", Misyunas said.
