Harsher punishments for animal cruelty takes force in Ukraine

The fines for animals abuse go up to $320, the imprisonment - up to 8 years

The President’s law about toughening criminal responsibility for cruel attitude against animals comes into effect in Ukraine on Friday.

The bill submitted certain changes to the Criminal Code of Ukraine. According to the document, brutal treatment is abuse of animals, beating or other violent actions which caused physical distress and suffering without physical injury, trauma or death, leaving an animal to the merсу of fate, including violation of the animal care rules.

All these actions lead to the $130 - $200 fine with confiscation of an animal in case further stay with the owner poses threat for the animal’s life and health.

If two and more animals were abused, the second punishment shall be $190 - $320 or administrative arrest up to 15 days with confiscation of the animal.

At that the abusive actions against animals aimed to concupiscency satisfaction shall be fined with $130 - $320 with further with confiscation of the animal.

The article on cruel attitude against animals is now added to the Criminal Code of Ukraine.

Those especially violent to the animals in front of minors and against two or more animals, repeatedly or in the group of persons shall be sentenced to 5 – 8 years in prison.
