Geroi Arsenala, the Russian bulk freighter shipwrecked in the waters of the Black Sea. Russian emergencies ministry reported that on the morning of April 19.

‘At 03.54 a.m, the State Border Guard reported that Geroi Arsenala vessel, running under the state flag of Panama, sent a S.O.S. signal. The ship wrecked 14 nautical miles off the coast in the Black Sea waters. According to the preliminary data, 12 crew members were aboard; 9 of them are Ukrainian citizens, another two are Russians and one more is Georgian,’ the Russian authority said.

Under preliminary data, the ship’s crew failed to cope with the powerful storm.

A towed boat was sent to the wreckage site for rescue.  However, no vessel can reach the site due to the ‘adversary weather conditions; sea waves reach three meters high, and gusts of wind are up to 20 meters per second’.

As of 9 a.m., the rescue team managed to save one of the twelve crew members, he experienced a bad hypothermia. The rescuers set visual contact with another four men, but cannot take them aboard due to strong waves moving them away from the boat. The actual condition of the rest of the crew is currently unknown.

The transport supervision services are to check if the wrecked ship was technically sound.
