United States expelled from the country two Russian officials, after an attack on an American diplomat in Moscow. This is reported in the statement of the State Department, according to the BBC Russian Service.

According to State Department spokesman John Kirby, the Russians were expelled on 17 June. He refused to clarify details. The incident in Moscow became known after the publication on June 29 in Washington Post: newspaper wrote that on June 6 Russian guard of the US Embassy in Moscow beat up an American diplomat who tried to enter the building, breaking his shoulder.
The representative of the Russian Foreign Ministry Maria Zakharova said that the information in the Washington Post "is not just distorted, but contrary to the actual facts": according to her, the American was actually a CIA agent, returning after the intelligence operation, and he attacked the guard first.
