‘The United States does not recognize the legitimacy of the Russian Supreme Court’s ruling to uphold the ban of Crimean Tatars’ self-governing body, the Mejlis. We reject the characterization of the Mejlis as an ‘extremist’ organization and condemn the suspension of this democratic institution. This decision is particularly troubling given Russia’s systematic and unjust mistreatment of Crimean Tatars,’ reads the statement released at the website of the U.S. Department of State.

The U.S. authority condemned politically motivated arrests, kidnappings of people, restriction of freedom and movement, searches and houses and mosques, all of which is conducted by the Russian ‘authorities’ of the peninsula. The Department of State urged Russia to put an end to this unacceptable practice immediately and return the occupied Crimea under the jurisdiction of Ukraine, which is the necessary condition to consider lifting of sanctions off the Kremlin.
