Washington has not received a formal invitation to participate in the negotiations in Astana on the settlement of the Syrian conflict, which is scheduled for January 23. This was stated during a briefing by deputy speaker of the US State Department Mark Toner, "Ukrinform" reported.

"To my knowledge, we have not received an official invitation to attend the meeting in Astana," Toner stated.

Toner also emphasized that US continues to support any efforts, aimed at further advancement of negotiations in Geneva to find a solution."

As it was reported later by Washington Post with reference to the source, Russia invited the Administration of US President-elect Donald Trump.

According to the interlocutor of the newspaper, the current administration of US President Barack Obama was "demonstrably" excluded from the list of participants.

Trump’s administration has not yet taken a decision about visiting the meeting, the report says.
