The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine presented the note of protest to the Ambassador of the Republic of Poland to Ukraine Jan Pieklo concerning the intentions of the Polish side to the place of the image of the Cemetery of the Defenders of Lviv in the new passports. The press service of the Foreign Ministry reported this.

'Ukraine treats such intentions as the unfriendly act that negatively influences the development of the strategic Ukrainian-Polish partnership. The estimation of the historical events is the issue of the historians. Ukraine stands against the politicization of the certain historical facts that can harm the development of the mutual strategic partnership between Ukraine and the Republic of Poland, the MFA claimed.

The Cemetery of the Defenders of Lviv is the Polish military memorial in Lviv. The defenders are the partakers of the fight against the West Ukrainian People's Republic (1918-1919) and Bolsheviks (1920). They were buried at the Cemetery of the Defenders of Lviv, which is a part of the Lychakiv Cemetery.

Poland plans to release the passports with new design dedicated to the century of the Independence in 2018. It is also planned to place them in the image of the Cemetery of the Defenders of Lviv.
