The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine is going to send Belarus a note in connection with the arrest of Ukrainian poet Serhiy Zhadan in Minsk. This was reported on Facebook by Iryna Gerashchenko, the First Deputy Chairman of the Verkhovna Rada.
"I have just spoken with Valeriy Zhygunov, the representative of our Embassy in Belarus. He confirmed that Zhadan was detained in Minsk and he actually spent night in Lenin local police precinct in Minsk. The embassy got to know the story just now as family unfortunately did not contact them earlier, while Belorussians did not provide any information on detention of Ukrainian citizen, which is an obvious violation. Foreign Ministry already instructed to accompany Serhiy to the airport until he crosses the border, deputy minister has just informed me," Gerashchenko said.
"The embassy and Ukrainian Foreign Ministry are already preparing the note on this occasion. This is a disgrace, in fact, and we need to put it straight with Minsk and let them understand that the actions of the Federal Security Service are unacceptable, which also affects bilateral relations with Belarus in this shameful way, by collecting joint black lists. This is also one of the targets - to worsen the relationship between Minsk and Kyiv. I think Ukraine should raise the issue of prohibiting such lists, when Russian Federation and FSB decide which Ukrainians have the right to visit Belarus," Gerashchenko stressed.
Ukrainian envoy to Belarus is currently clarifying the circumstances and reasons for detention of Ukrainian poet, according to the head of consular service of Ukrainian MFA, UNN reports.
