US President-elect Donald Trump said he would prefer keeping intact sanctions against Russia "at least for a period of time".

He stated this in an interview published in the Wall Street Journal on January 13, Reuters reported.

At the same time, US President-elect said that he could lift the sanctions in the future. "If you get along and if Russia is really helping us, why would anybody have sanctions if somebody’s doing some really great things?" Trump said.

Trump suggested that he could lift the sanctions imposed in December last year by Obama administration in connection with the accusations of cyberattacks against Moscow. According to the US president-elect, it will happen if Moscow proves helpful in battling terrorists and reaching other goals important to Washington, the Journal reported.

Trump announced his readiness to meet with the president of Russia Vladimir Putin after the inauguration. "I understand that they would like to meet, and that’s absolutely fine with me," he said.
