Out of two presidential candidates Hillary Clinton had much longer and tighter connections with Ukraine, but according to elections results it is clear that Donald Trump will be a new American leader. We gathered newly elected US President’s main quotes concerning Ukraine.
The USA supported Ukraine “with words but not with actions”.
In February 2014 Trump commented Russia’s invasion to Ukraine.
In August 2015 in his interview for NBC Trump declared that he didn’t care if Ukraine enters the NATO or not.
Europe should take some responsibility for the conflict in Ukraine, he added.
In September 2015 on the Yalta European Strategy Annual Meeting, Trump said that Ukraine should get more of international support.
The USA supports Ukraine but "it is more in words, than in practice" in his opinion. “Our President is not strong enough, only words. We call it chitchat. Part of the problem is that Putin doesn't respect our President,” he said.
"I’m all for Ukraine"
In March 2016 Donald Trump expressed his commitment to Ukraine.
Answering a journalist’s question about whether he thinks that the fact that Russia’s rebuilding their nuclear arsenal will return the world to the old Cold War, Trumps stated to talk that NATO’s has to be changed to include terror. It has to be changed from the standpoint of cost because the United States bears far too much of the cost of NATO.
And suddenly he switched to Ukraine’s topic.
He said he had friends that live in Ukraine and noted that nobody except for the USA tried for help.
"Putin’s not going into Ukraine"
In August billionaire raised a wave of anger by his comment that the people of Crimea would rather be with Russia and the USA have to consider that.
Answering the journalist’s question on whether he was ready to recognize the annexed Crimea as a part of Russian Federation he said that he was going to take a look at it and noted that the people of Crimea have made their choice and would rather be with Russia.
But in just a few days, on air of ABC Trump declared that “Putin’s not going into Ukraine”.
The correspondent responded that he was already there, that Putin was already in Ukraine meaning the Crimea annexation.
Later he clarified his position in Twitter:
Making a speech for his supporters on Ohio, Trump decided to respond to the accusations saying that he didn’t know about Crimea’s occupation and he added that an attempt to return Crimea to Ukraine by force would end up in World War III.
Poroshenko was planning to meet both US presidential candidates in the fields of United Nations General Assembly in September this year but he only managed to talk to Clinton.
“We requested a meeting with both Clinton and Trump. We couldn’t conduct a meeting with Trump because of the tight schedule,” the Ukrainian AP said. Trump simply ignored an invitation from Poroshenko, Foreign Policy announced.
Despite that Trump’s victory for a lot of Ukrainians was a surprise, our politicians do not panic and say that they will try to establish relationship with him.
Earlier it was reported that Poroshenko’s Administration was ready to work with Trump and we had to develop our relationship at the level that we were building for many years.
