“Savchenko is the symbol of Ukraine, so the task of the Russian authorities is to break the will and spirit of the Ukrainian people. It all started yet in 2014, during the Revolution of Dignity in Ukraine. Moscow didn’t like it at all, so all the events that followed could be considered a sort of revenge – because Ukraine and the Ukrainian nation dared to make the decision, which was different from that of the Kremlin. Now Savchenko is the basis of this struggle; and as a symbol of this struggle, she is in the middle of the environment of possible provocations against her and those who support and protect her. Putin needs to break this symbol because he truly believes he should turn up the only hero in this whole story; there can’t be two heroes in it”, said Savchenko’s lawyer Nikolai Polozov.
The member of the pilot’s defense team added that Nadiya is “an extremely interesting personality”. “Not every woman would serve in the peacekeepers’ corps during the war in Iraq; not every woman would go back home and continue to study at the aviation college as a helicopter pilot. And that’s the greatest mistake of the Kremlin in this war. They picked up Savchenko to build up this entire story with her trial; they could pick up anyone else – a man. But in that case, it wouldn’t have such impact on the international society. So, it seems to me that the Kremlin failed – the very moment when it picked up Savchenko as its hostage”, Polozov concluded.
