Odesa region’s Head of the Main Directorate of the National Police Giorgi Lortkipanidze announced about his resignation. This was posted on Odesa police website. “Police forces of Odesa need fresh blood to grow,” he wrote in his post.
“Today I made a decision to resign on my own initiative. I want to thank the President Petro Poroshenko and the Governor Saakashvili for an opportunity presented to me... I’m leaving my post of the Odesa Police Head but as a Ukrainian citizen, as a Police General I remain in service of Ukraine’s state and Supreme Commander-in-Chief. I believe in my people and in future of Ukraine,” he said.
On certain stage the police remained without operational and search activities, he noted. Now the regional police is understaffed by one thousand people, at the same time based on evaluation results another 400 police officers have to be fired, according to him.
Today Odesa is a much safer and peaceful city, though last year there were still roadblocks on the city’s borders, Lortkipanidze underlined.
More than two million tourists visited the region this year and this is also a tribute to the police forces, the Head of the National Police added.
