The visit of the U.S. Secretary of Defense is timed to the country’s Independence Day

James Mattis, the U.S. Secretary of Defense landed in Boryspil international airport on Wednesday afternoon. The U.S ambassador in Ukraine Marie Jovanovitch was among those who met him.

The high-ranked official visited Kyiv, as the Ukrainians mark the Independence Day on Thursday. Mattis will attend the military parade in the Ukrainian capital and meet with President Poroshenko, as well as with his Ukrainian counterpart Stepan Poltorak.

This is the first time in ten years that the U.S. Secretary of Defense comes to Ukraine.
