Latvia installed a 23km fence on the border with Russia to impede the penetration of illegal migrants, stated the press-secretary of the State Border Guard of Latvia Eugenia Pozniak, reports Delfi.lv.

"Works on the construction of the fence began in 2015, and were scheduled for completion until 2019. At present, the border is equipped with a border strip 65 km long ... The minimum height of the fence will be 2.7 meters, including barbed wire", said in a statement.

This year, for the equipment of the Latvian-Russian border we allocated 6.3 million euros, which, according to current plans, will allow us to equip the border strip 150 km long and to build a fence 60 km long, said Poznyak.

The total length of the Latvian-Russian border reaches 276 km, of which 193 km will be equipped with the fence - those areas where there are no natural barriers. In total for the construction of the fence it is planned to spend 17 million euros.
