The peninsula of Crimea for a while has been ‘part of Russia – in terms of history, cultural studies and linguistics’, Francois Fillon said. Le Figaro quoted the French presidential candidate from the Republican Party on April 20.

According to Fillon, one has to ‘respect the right of Crimea’s residents for self-determination’. The politician also said it would be possible to solve the issue of Crimea by organizing conference under the aegis of the United Nations.

‘Talking about Russia leaving Crimea is useless; that will never happen,’ Fillon said.

Earlier, this February, the candidate for French presidency had a criminal proceeding opened against him; he was accused of misappropriation of public funds, use of public property and trading in influence.
