Iran and China conducted joint naval exercises in the Persian Gulf near the strategically important Strait of Hormuz today, on June 18, Radio Liberty reports.

"The official Iranian news agency IRNA reported that one Iranian and two Chinese warships, a logistical vessel and a Chinese helicopter that arrived in the Iranian port of Bandar Abbas last week participated in the exercises," the report said.

These are the first such exercises since 2014. About 700 Iranian military seamen took part in military drills.

Earlier, the US Navy conducted joint exercises with Qatar in the Persian Gulf on June 17.

As previously reported, the US Senate approved tightening of sanctions against Russia and Iran.
