The composition of Ukrainian delegation to Davos-2016conveyed the plans of Kyiv on this event. The delegation was headed by President Poroshenko, Minister of Finance Natalia Yaresko, Minister of Economy Aivaras Abromavicius and mayor of Kyiv Vitali Klitschko were also part of the group.
During this visit, the President held a meeting with the head of the IMF Christine Lagarde, who assured of hope for good prospects "of the successful completion of the memorandum" on further lending. Poroshenko together with his Swiss counterpart agreed to provide Ukraine with financial assistance in the amount of EUR 200 mln. These are the practical results of the forum for Ukraine, perhaps we could put an end.
Another landmark event was the meeting of Poroshenko and the U.S. Vice President Joseph Biden. They have touched further ways of resolving Donbas conflict and monitoring of the Minsk agreement.
It was also reported that the sides discussed Russia’s a new project "North Stream-2", which provides for an increase in capacity of the gas pipeline passing under the Baltic Sea, what is threatening the transit of Russian gas through Ukraine. Ukrainian President and the Vice President of the United States described this project as "political". Well, it not very clear, what does it have to do with the United States, as Russia can implement the project only in cooperation with the European countries (notably Germany), with whom it would be logical to discuss it.
The statement that in the current year, Ukraine intends to intensify efforts to return Crimea, was voiced by the head of the Ministry of Finance and not the head of state. Forum participants reproached for the inability of the country to conduct transparent privatization and decentralization.
So-called "Ukrainian breakfast", organized by businessman Viktor Pinchuk, traditionally became the central event for Ukraine. It was held under the pretentious title "The world is changing. Does Ukraine change?". However, it did not work out. The answer to this rhetorical question became apparent.
The representative of Ukraine had a lot to listen about the inability of the country to fight against corruption, to carry out the necessary reforms and meet the requirements of the times in the economy. The main theme of the forum was "the Fourth Industrial Revolution". It provides for the creation of economies on the border industry, biology and physics, and this is taking in developed countries now. How closer is Ukraine to all these innovations? An average Ukrainian can look around his workplace and look at the results of his work and answer this question.
Representatives of Ukraine will continue to present the potential investors all the boring stories about improving the investment climate, reducing taxes and getting rid of Russian gas dependence. Successful negotiations with the IMF for another loan and restructuring of the existing debt were also listed as Ukraine’s traditional victories. Apparently, investors are not getting through it.
As told in the air of "Radio Liberty" the journalist Katia Gorchynska, who also attended the "breakfast", the representatives of the Ukrainian government tried to present their achievements to the forum participants, while the latter described the situation as they see it. Thus, two pictures of two different Ukraine were depicted. Judging by the reviews of the witnesses, investors see ubiquitous and pervasive corruption as the top spot in the picture of the modern Ukrainian. And they do not see the effective fight against it. Actually, this statement should be considered as a response of investors to the question posed in the title of "Ukrainian breakfast”.
