Censorship of media increased compared to former governance - Doniy
There are no systemic mechanisms to protect democracy and liberty of speech in Ukraine, ex-deputy said
For the moment no one is defending freedom of speech in Ukraine - neither structurally, nor organizationally, the political and social activist, former member of Ukrainian parliament Oleksandr Doniy claimed on the air of 112 Ukraine channel.
"Censorship of the media has increased compared to the time of Yanukovych and has become much bigger. Yanukovych tried to deal with freedom of speech, but now it is even more. And look, it appears that all public initiatives which supposedly were protecting the freedom of speech, are dead. Where is the so-called “Stop censorship”? They could not even protect Savik Schuster's program, which was not killed by all previous presidents. But during the incumbent presidency the killing of the program continues, no matter what personal attitude was towards Schuster. And where is the famous "Stop Censorship"? It turned out that that was the organizations that fought not for freedom of speech but against the individual political regime in order to become members, cogs of the next regime. And now no one defends the freedom of speech neither structural nor organizational. And that is a shame that we do not have systemic mechanisms for the defense of democracy and freedom of speech," Doniy said.
As it was reported before, 1+1 TV channel took off the air the broadcast of TV program Shuster LIVE. The broadcast of talk show was renewed over 112 Ukraine channel. Later, the anchor of Shuster LIVE received a letter with a demand to stop broadcasting TV program on 112 Ukraine channel reasoning that by the violation of license agreement.
Earlier, the National Council on Television and Radio Broadcasting issued a number of warnings and sanctions in the form of a fine on the leader of information broadcasting - 112 Ukraine TV channel. Moreover, on September 3 the regulator decided to annul licenses for digital broadcasting channel 112 Ukraine ostensibly because of failure of the order to return to performing the conditions of license agreement.
Reportedly, people`s deputy and leader of "Motherland" faction in Verkhovna Rada Yulia Tymoshenko made a stand for the liberty of speech in Ukraine during the Coordination board in Ukrainian Parliament. She called the Parliament for consideration of attacks upon independent media in Ukraine. In particular, the MP mentioned 112 Ukraine channel and Savik Shuster`s political talk-show Shuster LIVE.
In addition, on the Presidential website appeared a petition to defend the freedom of speech and reform the National Council for Television and Radio Broadcasting. The author of the petition is a human rights activist Semen Gluzman.
