An Afriqiyah Airways A320 Libyan jet was captured by the hijackers. The airliner was carrying out flight on domestic route, has landed in Malta after it was hijacked. This was reported by the Times of Malta publication.
Prime Minister of Malta wrote that he was aware of the potential threat of hijacking on his Twitter page.
The airplane followed a route from the Libyan city of Sebha to Tripoli. There were 118 people on board.
It is unclear what the demands are being made by the hijackers. It was also informed about threats to blow up the plane by hijackers.
Later it was reported that people who hijacked a Libyan airplane began to release passengers. This was reported by the Prime Minister of Malta Joseph Muscat.
"The first group of women and children was released," Muscat wrote. He said that 25 persons were released.
No Ukrainian citizens were reported on the plane, according to preliminary information of the Ukrainian embassy in Italy, the press-service of Ukrainian Ministry of Foreign Affairs reports.
Libyan domestic airlines plane was hijacked around noon by people who are allegedly the supporters of Muammar Gaddafi. Pilots of the plane were trying to land in Libya, however, it had landed in Malta at the invaders' request. The airport where the plane landed, was closed, all flights diverted. It has been reported that the invaders have explosives, but their exact demands were never made public. According to some reports, they demanded to provide a safe exit for fighters from Benghazi.
