“I find it quite difficult to persuade our strategic partners that military and technical assistance for Ukraine is directly connected with the Budapest memorandum, and that’ll contribute to their safety, too! I keep saying at all international-level meetings that a strong Ukrainian army, equipped with modern weaponry is the real contributor to peace in Europe, and a reliable shield of the West. Unfortunately, most of our partners - the European ones, above all, - tend to stick to the ‘we shouldn’t be annoying Russia’ cliché. In spring 2014, in the toughest hour, I asked our partners to provide us with military hardware and weapons, as we needed protection. And now, supplies of lethal weapons to Ukraine are being blocked under many sorts of excuses,’ Olexandr Turchynov said.
According to him, Ukraine’s defense industry cannot fully meet the requirements of the Ukrainian army in terms of modern weapons and vehicles – without effective military and technical cooperation with the West.
