The official stressed that ‘the United States and other NATO members continue to grow their military potential in the countries that neighbor Russia’ (RFE/RL). Shoigu apparently refers to the Alliance’s plans to place battalions in Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania and Poland. The decision was made so as to calm down the concerns caused by Russia’s annexation of Crimea in 2014 and the Kremlin’s support for separatists in eastern Ukraine.

Moscow considers NATO’s moves, specifically the deployment of counter-missile defense system in Eastern Europe, direct threats to Russia’s national security.
