The delivery of water to the occupied territories of Luhansk region is one of the most problematic issues to discuss at the negotiations. It was reported by the deputy and the President's Humanitarian Envoy at the Minsk peace talks regarding the War in Donbas Iryna Herashchenko in her interview for Ukrinform.
“For example, the supply of water in the Luhansk region. This is one of the hottest topics now. Ukraine treats the people of the occupied territories as to fellow citizens –hostages of the occupants so we cannot just cut them off water in the winter. In the end, this can destroy water supply system in general, and areas controlled by the government will suffer too. But we cannot supply water for free! Especially in the occupied territories, where the ruble prevails over hryvnia now!," Herashchenko said.
Popasna water plant plant suffers terrible losses that reached 11 million dollars starting from January 2015. At the same the militants collect money for municipal services, according to her.
“Not only civilians use water, but the enterprises that work in the occupied territories. Ukraine will not supply water for free, especially will not sponsor militants’ organizations. If a grandmother who receives minimal pension in Lviv or in Cherkasy pays for water, then Donbas residents have to pay for water also,” the deputy emphasized.
She noted that this position is voiced to the partners from OSCE or EU.
Earlier it was reported that ATO veterans to demand suspension of electricity and water supply to occupied Donbas. They think people who remained on the occupied territories will understand.
