People held a farewell ceremony on Maidan Nezalezhnosti (Independence Square) in Kyiv for Ukrainian soldier of 72nd brigade Leonid Derhach who died defending Avdiivka. This was reported by the correspondent of 112 Ukraine TV channel.
People and brothers in arms are gathering near the Independence Monument in the center of Kyiv to commemorate the deceased soldier who had call sign “Academician”.
Leonid Derhach was 37 years old. He died during the shelling of Avdiivka from MLRS Grad on February 1. He was a law enforcement officer and worked in the Administration in Fight with the Organized Crime of Chernivtsi region. He was a Candidate of Juridical Sciences in Chernivtsi National University.
Leonid Derhach was demobilized, but returned to service, signed a contract with the Armed Forces of Ukraine. He participated in battles in Volnovakha, Bila Kamianka.
Tomorrow a farewell ceremony will be held for him in Chernivtsi. He will be buried in his native village in Khotyn district of Chernivtsi. Lieutenant Leonid Derhach was posthumously awarded with Order of Bohdan Khmelnytsky of III class by the decree of the President of Ukraine Petro Poroshenko.
Earlier it was reported that a farewell ceremony for Avdiivka defenders was held on Maidan Nezalezhnosti in Kyiv yesterday. The conflict escalated in Donbas as militants continuously shell Avdiivka.
